活性氧(ROS)是指生物體內或自然環境中由氧組成並含有氧、在自然界中具有活性的一類物質的總稱:主要有一類激發態氧分子,即單線態氧分子或單線態氧分子。三種含氧自由基,即超氧陰離子自由基、羥基自由基和氫過氧自由基,兩種過氧化物,即過氧化氫和脂質過氧化物,以及一種含氮氧化物。二氫乙錠可以穿過細胞膜進入細胞與DNA或RNA結合形成氫化乙錠產生紅色螢光。二氫乙錠主要被細胞內的超氧陰離子型活性氧氧化。 二氫乙錠本身是藍色螢光,最大激發波長為370nm,最大發射波長為420nm。二氫乙錠脫氫後與RNA或DNA結合產生紅色螢光,激發波長為300nm或518nm,發射波長為610nm。
